What I'm Into - January

Walker took Shep hunting for the first time this weekend. Shep was surrounded by MEN and GUNS and GUTS and  ARROWS. He ate the heart of a deer, y'all. Just -- whatever. He was in paradise. And I was in paradise in my cozy bed. Because

Books I'm Reading:

Y'all know I'm reading this one:

Down 5 pounds so far. And I'm really excited because Lyn-Genet offered to consult with me. Yea! It is hard for a rule breaker like me to follow The Plan to a T - but I've repented. Can't wait to see how it helps!

Parenting from the Inside Out by Daniel Siege

He also wrote The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind which I haven't read but hear is great.

This book was recommended to us at the seminar on attachment we went to, but it is in no way just for adoptive parents. If you are fascinated by psychology like me, you'll love it.  The goal is to help you understand the events from your past that influence your parenting. If you've ever wondered why certain things your kids do set you off in a special way (for me, it's backtalk), this book will help explain it. And then you'll discipline out of the present, not the past.  Bonus: you'll get to analyze your husband too and your parents too and and and...

Parenting Your Internationally Adopted Child

Well, if you are not parenting an internationally adopted child, then this might not appeal to you. It is really good though.

Speaking of, this is a great link called Supporting and Understanding the Adopted Family. Pssst - it's a great link to send to grandparents.

TV I'm Watching:

After we finished Breaking Bad on Netflix I became an honorary Braverman, which means I began to make ridiculous decisions about all aspects of my life, by watching Parenthood. I'm finished with season 3 and I want to watch season 4, but it's $30 to buy. I'm scared the minute I do, it'll come out on Netflix. Plus, I don't know if I should by from Amazon, so I can only watch it on our big TV, or iTunes, and only be able to watch it in the bedroom. It's a completely agonizing decision which ranks very high on the First World Problems List, y'all. Please start a prayer chain.

I need a new Netflix to start. Was thinking maybe Friday Night Lights, since I seem to be the only person on the planet who has never seen it. Any other ideas?

How happy are we that Downton Abbey is back?!? (I'm a composite of Mary and Sybil. I am NOT Edith.)

Expensive Things I'm Shopping for:

My Canon Rebel camera was stolen from my luggage somewhere between Addis Ababa and Houston. If you've read my blog long enough, you'll know that I lose/have a camera stolen about once a year, but never one this expensive. I'm so aggravated I can't even talk about it. Blessedly I had downloaded all my pictures before we left. So now I am trying to choose another camera. A cheaper one.

Yummy Things I Was Cooking:

Before I started The Plan I made cream of mushroom soup and the entire family was licking the pot. Mmmmmm.

Ways Blogger Is Irritating Me Tonight:

It won't let me center The Plan and it keeps arbitrarily turning my font blue. %&@&

Crazy Thing We're Up To Because Bringing a Kid Home From Africa Isn't Exciting or Busy Enough:
House hunting. Hold me.

I leave you with some linkage:

My dear friend Megan at SortaCrunchy is entering her 33rd week of carrying two identical man-childs. So fun! For us. For her, so big! So uncomfortable! So tired!  But so blessed!

Bring Blogging Back did get me reminiscing about the old days of blogging

Anne has a great response to Sandy Hook that could only be called Christians, Don't Say Dumb, Offensive Stuff

Another great response to Sandy Hook. Randy Alcorn always nails it beautifully. Why Doesn't God Do More to Restrain Evil and Suffering?

When Your Child Says "There's Nothing to Do" by Susan Yates, who wrote one of my favorite parenting books ever: And Then I Had Kids

Loved (and cried through) this one Pictures Can Lie

Meg did a fantastic series called Ten Ways to Encourage a Global Perspective in Your Kids

What are you up to?

  1. Suggestion on camera hunting: Try a secondhand Canon Rebel. Plenty of people try to get rid of perfectly good cameras because they get upgrades for Christmas gifts. I say this because I upgraded once and there was NOTHING wrong with my Rebel.

  3. Hulu has the newest season of Parenthood. It's how I watch it. There will be more tears. Nobody thinks they are Edith, but every family has one.

  4. Lately, I've been doing a lot of reading. I have loved blog reading for years, and have followed your sweet family through your blog since the beginning of the adoption process. I have laughed more times than I can count, I have cried more times than I can count also. Other times, of course, I've laughed until I cried. ;-)

But the big thing I'm doing is chasing my childhood dream of becoming a novelist. What a process! If your interested, you can click over to my blog at authorbrandikennedy.blogspot.com (different one than the one I used to comment from), and there are links there to find me on Facebook as well.

  5. Please let us know what camera you choose! I'm always looking for a good one but I don't want to go all the way up to DSLR in price or size. It seems like there are only 2 kinds of cameras though-- good and expensive, or affordable and crappy. If you find a gem, do share!

  6. You live in Texas-you must watch Friday Night Lights. We loved it!

  7. Shannon (from A Little Adrift: http://alittleadrift.com/2012/12/best-gifts-for-travelers/) suggests the Panasonic Lumix micro-four thirds for travelers. I'm kind of tempted to buy that one as my next upgrade. It still LOOKS like an old school camera (I hate cameras that look like business card holders), but it's tiny. Without the lens (interchangeable lenses!), it's only 1.3 x 4.4 x 2.7 inches. Plus, it takes pictures in RAW format (as opposed to JPG, although you can convert them). Amazon's got it (including a 14-42mm lens) for about $400.

  8. 1) I love epm too. Wow. and 2) Never watched Parenthood. I keep hearing about how wonderful it is, but I can't even keep up with Downton Abbey and I only allow myself one show addiction at a time. :)

  9. You can watch season 4 of Parenthood on Hulu! For free! I have started watching the show from the beginning on Netflix too. I am in the middle of season 2. Great show!

  11. What am I up to? Giving Job a run for his money, and trying to stay faithful and loving and compassionate and fair-minded in the presence of people who would rip the shirt off your back if they could, for no other reason than that being self-serving and cunning is the only way they know how to be. And these people happen to be our landlord and I don't want to be here any more but we're trusting that God will make all things right, according to His will.

Please keep up the writing - this blog helps me stay sane.

  12. Missy, will you please pretty please link up with What I'm Into next week? The link up will be up at my blog on Wednesday.

You are not house hunting again. NOT. You are? Oh dear. I feel the need to meet up with you for sangria stat. Also, I haven't watched Friday Night Lights yet either. But it's on my list for this year!

  13. Oh, that is awful about your camera. Ugh! You should check out Amazon (used) and Ebay for a replacement. You can still get a really nice camera but for a muuuuuuuch lower price. Winning!

  14. OK, the "I love not camping" thing? I have that pin and I keep it on my desk. I laugh every time I see it, as does my family because they all know me. My husband used to take my girls one weekend every year, but me? I'd stay home in my comfy bed. :)

    So bummed about your camera.

  15. Please update me on your The Plan progress. I followed the first three days to the letter before I had to travel out of town, and only lost 1 pound. I just looked up the calorie content of flax seeds. No wonder I am gaining weight! I think I'll go back to my old ways.
